Up in the Maple depicts a male Varied Thrush in a mature Big Leaf Maple that grows along our driveway here in Coquille, Oregon. I love the moss that drapes the branches of the trees on this property and though it is labor intensive to paint in any medium, it is a lot of fun. These birds are one of my favorites and I am always happy to hear the return of their voice in autumn.
This painting was selected by juror Liz Haywood-Sullivan for an Honorable Mention in the 2020 Dakota Pastels Winter quarter Pastel Competition. You may purchase prints, home decor and accessories of this image by clicking "Shop" at the top right of this page.
