Fox Sparrow

I usually see these handsome, round-bodied sparrows in low thickets or on the ground, kicking away leaf litter in search of insects and seeds.  They're often hanging out with other sparrows and rarely venture far from cover. They breed in coniferous forest and dense mountain scrub, spending their winters in scrubby habitat and forest. I always enjoy hearing their sweet song wafting around in the sprintime, a joyful sound that will brighten any day!  This particular bird was perched in a winter Starlotta Magnolia at the edge of the forest where I used to live in Coquille, Oregon.
