Western Wood-Pewees breed in open woodlands, forest edges and forests near streams, from sea level to around 10,000 feet elevation. They sit on exposed branches and fly out to catch flying insects, often returning to the same perch. At the edge of my backyard there is an Alder overlooking a creek and I watch them everyday during the breeding season, as they flit back and forth catching insects above the water. There is a willow nearby where I have seen them feeding their young as well. I feel very fortunate to have these handsome little birds nearby. Some sources note that populations are declining in some areas,
particularly in British Columbia and Oregon. This loss is attributed to habitat loss and degradation on both breeding and wintering grounds.
